ALTON LOWE HOLDS SPRING ART EXHIBITION
Not even a hurricane can keep one of The Bahamas' foremost artists, Alton Lowe, from
holding his annual art exhibition at the Lowe Art Gallery in Green Turtle Cay. This
year the show opens to the public on Friday 5th May. Mr Lowe, who lives and works
in his studio, will display his new works. Each painting is tied to the bright tropical
Bahamas vistas. Mr Lowe's paintings feature native orchids, bright native flowers
and medicinal berries, as well as the sun-drenched landscapes of The Bahamas.
Both Hurricanes Floyd and Irene battered Mr Lowe's lushly landscaped hillside studio
overlooking Black Sound. The grounds were stripped of hundreds of plants. "Amazingly,
the natives orchids remained. Although the trees were blown down, the orchids hung
on tightly to the trees," remarked Mr Lowe. The studio, once in tatters, is now fully
restored and the trees, with their orchids intact, have been righted. The garden
brings inspiration and joy to Mr Lowe as he gazes out of his studio windows. For
years, Mr Lowe has painted the flowers in his garden. His paintings are held in noted collections
around the world, including that of the Royal Family.
Cast bronze sculptures by Miami artist James Mastin will also be featured at the exhibition.
Mr Mastin permanently captures Bahamian icons in metal sailboats, traditional crawfishermen,
Bahamian parrots and sailfish have all been subjects for this adopted son of The Bahamas. This year Mastin will show his new works Hurdlers
and Millennium Man
for the first time at this spring exhibition. Mastin will also exhibit his paintings
of English landscapes, which he created after touring the British Isles.
If Bahamian colours, plants or flowers bring you joy, this is a show not to be missed.
After the opening, the show may be seen from 10 am until 2 pm 5th May through 30th
June, or by appointment in the Lowe Art Gallery in Black Sound, Green Turtle Cay,
(242) 365-4094.
