NATIONAL NOTES

It's Longer in The Bahamas:Bahamians have proportionately more people reaching the age of 100 and beyond than any other country in the world according to Dr Brian Humblestone, a private practitioner who worked as chief psychiatrist for the government. Dr Humblestone based his findings on the 1990 census which recorded 44 centenarians. He attributed the high number of people living to beyond 100, sometimes to 115, to a low-stress lifestyle and a mainly seafood diet. Times are changing, however

It's Quicker in The Bahamas: By the time you read this the 2002 general election will be over and the next government of The Bahamas should have been established. The two main parties are the Free National Movement, led by Tommy Turnquest, who have been in power for the past 10 years; and the Progressive Liberal Party, led by Perry Christie, who were previously in power for 25 years. Unlike the two and a half years of the United States, The Bahamas allows only 30 days of canvassing and election politicking. The period is short but intense.
