MARINER'S COVE
by Suzanne Young

Everybody agrees that the winter of 97-98 has not been the greatest. Constant strong winds from the east have put fishing and island hopping excursions on hold. But the enchantment of the turquoise sea has been as thrilling as ever.

Snap Two is standing by ready to go with the Ray Youngs, Fred Grimms and Kent Kellys. It is the same for the Frank Kays, Al Shews and many more frustrated boaters. The Greenspans had to send theirs back to Green Turtle Cay without ever setting out before they had to return home. Their granddaughter Ariella filled the time for Eileen with her happy smile and bouncy curls.

Two of the Youngs' daughters, Gail Young of Hoosick Falls NY and Laura Carleton of Duxbury MA, who are now residents of Mariner's Cove, had a great time in Marsh Harbour shopping for colourful additions to their condo. With them were Megan Carleton and Shay Wilber, on their senior year spring break. Soon the rest of the tribe - from seven month old Logan and two year old Morgan to the parents, aunts, uncles and grandmother - will descend on Mariner's Cove, making it a little difficult to deny that we are great-grandparents.

Dick and Dotty Greenway are becoming regular visitors who fit right in with the game players, especially when we play a bloodthirsty game called Jokers and Pegs.

March and April brought out the buggy brigade. Traffic jams were almost common as grandparents promenaded their precious stroller passengers along the criss-crossing walks. Bridget Warren put in lots of mileage with Meredith Hashey ready to take over the grandmother's privilege when her daughter, Jill Warren, and John took a break.

Like a little pink fairy skipping across the grass in her tutu every morning, two-and-a-half year old Page Ritter was heading for breakfast at Grandma's. Page is visiting the Zulaufs along with her brother Jake and mother Roxanne. Mary Lynn and David Banning have had lots of time to visit with their cousins Corky and Judy Solether and their family: Steve and Karrie with young Wes and Hannah.

Constantly on the move, Byron Krantz made good use of his time on the gold course while Joan kept up her fitness routine, allowing time to enjoy the beach. Following them from the 'firm' were Don and Toni Sherzer and their 14 year old daughter Gabriella, who brought a friend Lauren Gibbons. The girls had no trouble making many friends on the beach and at the Tipsy.

It was three birthday cakes and champagne under the stars at a party held for the Mariner's Cove Vice President Al Shew, Kay Kelly and Steve Isaac, son of hosts Tony and Gina Isaac.

When Art and Dolores Lukenda arrive we can look forward to lots of fun and fabulous cooking. They are like a team with their relaxed sense of humour. And Dolores is a real artist in the kitchen.

While Walter Kunzel rests and reads, Elfie puts herself in the line of traffic to the pool, where she is sure to pick up conversations. She has an insatiable appetite to learn everything about where she is and the people she meets. She is a source of all kinds of information, which in valuable in her position as Director of Special Projects for New Jersey Pride, a state publication. Walter is a very busy decorator, with clients all over the US.

Besides the poolside, the laundry room is a place to meet people. I had a chat there with Avril Brayton who, with her husband Steve, just finished a ski vacation at Sugar Loaf in Maine. They are from Halifax NS, another neat couple who found their way here through Tom and Peggy Larder.

The John Riches have bought and moved into Charlie and Peg Morgan's house, and the condo formerly owned by the Ferberts is where the Morgans will hang their golf clubs.

Repeat visitors George and Brenda Loubet from Springville PA just arrived with their two children, Linda and Jesse, and an exchange student from Germany, Constanzia, known as Conny.

Dick and Minna Passman were here to finish a very grueling stint as Mariner's Cove President and spouse. Dick passed the gavel to Kent Kelly after a round of applause for his dedicated, diligent service to Mariner's Cove.

Now they are owners rather than renters, Frank and Mary Maggio are hosting their kids' families and loving every minute.

Art Parsells, who was one of our favourite and willing workers on any project, has not been able to come for a few years and we all miss him. His wife Jenny came for a short visit and now their son Glenn and his wife Nadine are here, along with daughter Erica and son Glenn Jr. They are obviously enjoying the outdoor life in the sun.

A perfect evening at Bob and Janice Rodin's is one of Janice's sumptuous dinners followed by a cut-throat game of Jokers and Pegs afterwards. You'd never believe they are really a happy, civilised couple!

This leaves the Beckwiths, Moores and Jane Dixon. The Beckwiths' place is never dull and has a steady stream of guests. Once in a while Mac finds room when he manages to leave his office in Rochester for a vacation of golf. The Moores are hosts to horseshoe addicts as well as golfing friends and annual visitors, son Rick and Diane Gow. Jane Dixon comes and goes with lots of bridge games in between.

So no matter what the weather has done this year, it would be hard to convince anyone that this has not been another beautiful season at Mariner's Cove.
