Close Escape at Airport:
The nosegear of a Taino Air Cessna 402 failed while landing at Marsh Harbour International
Airport on a flight from Freeport on 22nd March. Although three green lights came
on, indicating all was well and all wheels locked into place, the nosegear collapsed and the craft skidded down the runway damaging the undercarriage and propellers.
There were no injuries and damage was estimated at $20,000.
International One People Day:
Abaco Central High School celebrated the international diversity of its students and
teachers by holding a One People Day festival. The national anthems of nine different
countries were sung or played and information about each country was given in the
form of song, dance, skits and addresses. The countries, which represented the teachers
and students of the school, were Argentina, The Bahamas, Britain, Canada, Guyana,
Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and the USA. Each country decorated a classroom
and displayed food and cultural items to bring a greater understanding of both similarity
and diversity between nations. The Haitian room also featured a live band playing
Haitian music, while Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Jamaica served up hot
and spicy foods. The Bahamas presented lots of seafood while the British, of course, served
up tea and biscuits.
Pay What? Who? Us? No Way!:
A party of 14 Bahamas Electricity Corporation executives travelled to Man-O-War Cay
on 28th March to give details of the new service BEC is providing to the residents
of the cay. Residents heard that they were part of a cays project that would also
link up Guana Cay from Murphy Town. Present for the corporation were Assistant General Manager
Family Islands, George Knowles, and Manager of BEC Abaco, Benjamin Beneby. All was
peace and tranquility until BEC's Ms Edgerin Wilson mentioned that the required security deposit would be twice the higher of the first two monthly billings. This visibly
disgruntled the many residents present and it was pointed out that this would amount
to $1,100 for some residents. Scott Weatherford had taken an informal survey and
said the average security deposit for Man-O-War residents would be $400, while it was
$150 on the mainland. The residents present completely rejected the proposal.
Shell Saxon Superstars Perform:
Over 30 members of the leading Bahamian Junkanoo group, the Shell Saxon Superstars,
were featured in the Easter Junkanoo Parade at Dove Plaza in Marsh Harbour on 3rd
April. The show was opened by the Ministry of Tourism's Sherry Parker and featured
KB, Ira Storr and Spank Band as well as members of local Junkanoo groups. It was a lively
and enjoyable evening and police estimated an attendance of 3,500 - at least one-third
of which were tourists.
Support in Mores Island:
MP for South Abaco Hon Robert Sweeting made a presentation of wheelchairs and walkers
to two needy ladies on Mores Island on 10th April. He made it clear that the gifts
were made possible through the generosity of private citizens of Abaco and thanked
Patrick J Bethel for his help in the administration of the gifts. The need of the ladies
had been brought to MP Sweeting's attention while he was in Mores Island at the time
of the rebuilding of the island's airport. He had asked Tommy Dames, a resident of
the island, for any particular need and Mr Dames had pointed out the plight of the ladies
concerned. In addition, cement and other supplies were to be provided so that ramps
could be constructed for the ladies' convenience.
