RAIN, GLORIOUS RAIN
A dry and dusty Abaco welcomed rain on 17th April for the first time in many weeks.
Accompanied by a spectacular lightning storm, a front moved in and quenched many
forest fires with brief but substantial precipitation.
For the first time in memory, fire reached the airport in Sandy Point. The National
Park, home to Abaco's parrots, burned for weeks. Another blazing fire had been stopped
short of a gas station on the Scherling Bootle Highway. The area south of Leisure
Lee was affected, as well as vast stretches of farm land in south Abaco near Wilson City.
The whole of the Abaco Highway bore testament to an unusually severe season of forest
fires.
