GARBAGE, UTTER
GARBAGE
It is generally accepted that the Central Abaco Council, under
the leadership of Chief Councillor Silbert Mills, has done an excellent job
during its term of office. There were apprehensions when the new slate was
elected but they have been allayed to a great extent. One area of discontent
remains, however. The collection of garbage during the last year in the greater
Marsh Harbour district has been sporadic at best. Piles of garbage have been
left throughout Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town and Murphy Town, much to the pleasure
of the local potcake population.
The garbage contract is held by Deputy
Chief Councillor Jason Swain, who claims that mechanical breakdowns were
responsible for the poor service. It is understood that Mr Swain receives full
contract payment whether collection is made or not.
This unsatisfactory
situation has led to requests from Dundas Town and Marsh Harbour for separate
garbage collection services when the present contract with Deputy Chief
Councillor Swain runs out in December.
