GARDENING
Jack
Hardy
November is one of the most rewarding months for Abaco gardeners.
It is a time when virtually anything can be planted and the grass has slowed
down. Young vegetables are showing promise and flower annuals grow quickly.
November is a good month.
If you planted tomatoes in October, it is time
to plant some more to ensure successive crops. November is the month for sowing
spinach and lettuce. Most rewarding are the loose leaf lettuce varieties such as
Simpson Black Seeded. They grow quickly and you can take a few leaves at a time
without disturbing the plant's growth.
Flowering annuals grow very well
during our Abaco winter. Choose your favourites and start them as soon as
possible. If you want flowers by Christmas then you will be better off buying
some potted annuals from Pine Woods Nursery as well as sowing
seeds.
Don't forget the autumn feeding of your citrus and fruit trees.
Apply 6-6-6 fertilizer to the soil within the canopy of your trees and use a
chelated iron drench close to the trunk of the tree. Finish off by spraying the
foliage with a minor nutrient solution.
Those who have Carambola trees
can look forward to a harvest during the holiday season. It is the perfect fruit
tree for second home owners as it produces while you are in residence. The trees
can be pruned to stay small yet will still bear heavily.
