NATIONAL NOTES

US Embassy Says Thank You: The US Embassy in Nassau has thanked the Bahamian authorities for their close cooperation in dealing with the Marsh Harbour aeroplane crash which took the life of singer Aaliyah Haughton and eight other American citizens. The statement read: "The professional and courteous service provided by the Royal Bahamian Police Force, the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital and the Rand Laboratory, the Coroner's Office, the Ministry of Transportation, Aviation and Local Government, Bahamasair and the Civil Aviation Department has been invaluable to us in dealing with this tragic accident. The prompt and professional response of the Bahamian government and the compassion shown for the families of those who died is greatly appreciated."

Kalik Celebrates: For the fourth time Kalik beer has captured the"Monde Selection Gold Medal" from the Belgian-based International Institute for Quality Selections. The selection was made from hundreds of competitors based on taste, colour and overall quality. Kalik beer is made by the Bahamian firm Commonwealth Brewery Limited and is distributed by Burns House. It was introduced to the public in 1988.

Medals, Medals, Medals: The Bahamas maintained its position as the greatest track and field country in the world when population is taken into account by winning a gold, a silver and two bronze medals at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. Debbie Ferguson won the gold in the Women's 200m, Avard Muncur took silver in the Men's 400m, Chandra Sturrup placed third in the Women's 100m and the Men's 4 x 400m team won the bronze.

Bay Street Burns: A conflagration starting in the Nassau Straw Market destroyed several other buildings on Bay Street on 4th September, including the Ministry of Tourism offices, Colony Place and Beaumont House. Historic artifacts were rescued from the Pompey Museum at Vendue House, which was slightly damaged. Many different stores in the arcades involved in the two block fire were totally destroyed. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries. The fire is reported as being started by a man with a jug of kerosene. 27 year old Cordney Gardiner, a peanut vendor, was charged in the Magistrate's court on 7th September.
