ABACO TRIATHLON
The 5th Gatorade Abaco Triathlon took place in ideal conditions on 5th September in
Marsh Harbour with over 70 competitors. The half mile swim started from the beachfront
of Abaco Beach Hotel & Resort and led into a 15 mile bicycle trip down the Abaco
Highway and a 3.1 mile run along the Pelican Shores road.
The most exciting part of the swim section was one of the competitors losing his shorts
en route, but as he is a an Abaco man we won't mention his name. It was said, however,
he made the fastest exit from the sea and up the beach to shelter.
It became clear during the bicycle stage that the ladies had come with more determination
than some of the men and they did well. Halfway through the run there were ladies
placing 3rd, 5th and 6th overall, but there were signs of exhaustion near the end.
As it turned out, 54 year old Linda Neary finished 4th overall in a time of 1:14:06
- an extraordinary performance. Sharon Sander (36) of San Antonio followed her in
5th with a time of 1:15:07.
The top three men were David Picciano of Orlando (1:09:17), Jim Passaro of Miami (1:10:33)
and Antonio Castelli of Sunrise (1:13:06). In 5th place for the men came Otto Bell
of Freeport in 1:18:05, while Abaco's Dale Hill filled ninth place with a time of
1:21:08.
The Gatorade Abaco Triathlon has established itself over the past few years as one
of the premier social and sporting events of the year with definite economic advantages
for the island. The Ministry of Tourism and the many local sponsors are to be congratulated on the growth of this well-run (in more ways than one) event.
