NATIONAL NOTES

Bodies Found on Paradise Island: The bodies of two young women have been discovered separately on Paradise Island and identified as those of British tourist Joanne Clarke and US teacher Lori Fogleman, also a visitor. US and British law enforcement agencies are assisting the Royal Bahamas Police Force in its investigations.

Fantasy Crew Member Murdered: Johannes Hortado, a crew member of the Carnival Cruise Line vessel Fantasy was shot to death while returning to the ship after shore leave in Nassau. Mr Hortado was in the company of other crew members when they were approached by a gunman. Mr Hortado and his colleagues fled, but Mr Hortado tripped and was shot by the assailant.

Nassau's Woes Continue: The poor international press about Nassau following the discovery of the bodies of two women on Paradise Island and the death of a Carnival Cruise Line employee continued when Superintendent Brian Morris of Scotland Yard, in Nassau to investigate the deaths of Joanne Clarke and Lori Fogleman, was held up at gunpoint and robbed of $500.

Bonnie Stayed Over the Ocean: Hurricanes Bonnie and Danielle both skirted the islands of The Bahamas to the east following a traditional late August/early September activity path. Neither caused any damage to the islands.

Looks Like the Fuss is Over: Early gay cruises by tour boats were met by demonstrations in Nassau, particularly when the cruises coincided with a Bahamian public holiday. Sovereign of the Seas arrived on 8th September with over 2,000 passengers which included gay men and their friends and families. There was no demonstration.

US Open Finalists: Bahamian tennis professional Mark Knowles and his Canadian partner Daniel Nestor reached the finals of the Men's Doubles in the US Open before losing 6-4, 6-7, 2-6 to Sandon Stolle and Cyril Suk. This was the third grand slam final the pair had reached and on this occasion they were only two points away from match point.

Bahamians Medal: Bahamian Chandra Sturrup placed second to US phenom Marion Jones in the Women's 100m at the IAAF World Cup in Johannesburg in a time of 10.97 seconds. Chandra later gained another silver medal as a member of the Americas 4 x 100m relay team. Abaco's Troy McIntosh took the bronze in a blanket finish to the Men's 400m in a time of 45.45 seconds and had to be taken from the competition area on a stretcher suffering from over-exertion in the high altitude conditions. Troy later repeated his third place performance when he ran the second leg for the Americas 4 x 400m relay team.

Life Among the Big Boys: The Bahamas bravely sent a team to compete in the Commonwealth Games seven-a-side rugby tournament. Playing four games in two days, the Bahamians lost to Canada 50-0, Western Samoa 57-12, Tonga 31-0 and New Zealand 93-0. It should be pointed out that The Bahamas playing New Zealand at rugby is like an amateur scratch side taking on the Chicago Bulls at basketball. In their final match against the Cayman Islands, the Bahamians won 48-17.

Bahamian Women Excel: At the Commonwealth Games held in Malaysia, Chandra Sturrup won the gold medal in the Women's 100m and Jackie Edwards the silver in the Women's Long Jump.
