COMMUNICATIONS...
Dear Mr.
Hardy,
I read your piece on the New Plymouth Inn with great interest. We
have owned a second home on Green Turtle since 1970. At that time the Inn was
owned by Harold Lowe, but was not then open (nor for several years previously).
In the early 70's Bill and Donna Rossbach moved down from Baltimore with their
family with the idea of operating an Inn. I met them at that time, and although
they were looking at the Guana Beach Hotel, they decided to reopen the New
Plymouth Inn. They didn't have the finances to purchase it, but leased it from
Harold Lowe and with consideable sweat equity reopened the Inn, putting their
two children in the local school. (In those days Amy Roberts, the school's
namesake, was still teaching.)
Shortly before their lease was to expire
(after three or five years, I don't remember) Harold Lowe contracted to sell the
New Plymouth Inn to Walter Davies, who in turn established his son Wally Jr as
innkeeper. This was probably about 1976. At the same time Walter Davies
purchased the Bluff House from Pearce and Kitty Coady and set up son Leslie and
daughter Melissa as operators of Bluff House. Wally still owns and operates the
Inn; Bill and Donna (after a sojourn in Florida) became managers of the Green
Turtle Club for many years (20?). They are now managing a hotel on Harbour
Island.
The two storey structure which contains the guest rooms is quite
old, once being a private residence. Before he died I did a video interview with
Charlie Lowe who had lived on GTC his entire life. At the Inn he recounted how
the owner of the property became a widower at around age 50. He went to Nassau
and brought back a 16 year old bride and commenced to raise a new family of more
than ten children.
With best regards,
George Douglas.
