THE TREASURE CAY MEMORIAL FUND
Harold Chance writes:
Upon learning of Charlie Morgan's death, the first person I told was Bob Birdsong who was
leaving that day for a month. He reached in his pocket and handed me a handful of bills and
said "Do something for Charlie!" After discussions with Charlie's many friends, it was decided
to solicit donations for a Memorial Fund, which would be used to make extraordinary
improvements to the TC golf course, which Charlie so dearly loved and literally saved. I made a sales pitch at a golf dinner. The response was from over forty friends for a total of more then $5000. In the future we are contemplating park benches for some tees and distinctive tee
markers for each hole. We would welcome any suggestions for other improvements which we could make. Contributions can still be made at the golf shop. Please make your checks payable to "TCB Memorial Fund".
Bob Gettinger writes:
Harold Chance started the Treasure Cay Memorial for golfers at a dinner party back in March
2001. He stated that Charlie Morgan was responsible for initiating the movement to improve our golf course. He then made the announcement that anyone who wished could contribute to a fund to put up a memorial for Charlie. Money was raised with the idea to plant some trees and flowers between the first tee and the ninth green, in front of the clubhouse. Harold designated me to do the planting. Then Andy Colson, one of the major figures in getting the golf course off and running, made a suggestion to erect a gazebo.
This I thought was a great idea. I didn't know too much about gazebos and started looking
around how to get the idea expedited. Lo and behold! I mentioned this to my master carpenter,
"Mac" McDermott, who at the time was working at my house. He told me he had just built one for the Barths. I then called Bruce Barth and he invited me to come see theirs, which I did. Two weeks later "Mac" built the gazebo and I put the kind of trees that Charlie liked, cassias, and also flowers around it. At this time it was agreed to call it the Treasure Cay Memorial for all golfers and a plaque was made and put up in the gazebo for that purpose.
