GARDENING
by Jack Hardy
September is the start of the Bahamian vegetable growing season, though it is probably best to start seeds in pots rather than set them out in your garden. September is also the month of highest hurricane activity so it would be wise to see what transpires in the way of storms before establishing a permanent garden.
Tomato, pepper and other seeds should be planted in pots in loose, friable soil and kept moist until they germinate and grow to a height of 3 or 4 inches. Keep the pots in semi shade until the seedlings appear, then set them out in the full sun.
It is best to leave the raising of lettuces, spinach and garden peas until late October when there is a definite change in night temperatures. They do far better then.
Don't forget to grow some herbs in your garden. Thyme, basil, marjoram and parsley are the most popular culinary herbs.
Pine Woods Nursery brings in trays of vegetable and herb starters during September. You may wish to wait until they arrive and start your garden then.
