RADIO ABACO NEWS

Bahama Games: The Abaco soccer team had to play its most important game against New Providence first and took the field with virtually no rest overnight after a very late arrival. They lost 5-1. However, they won the remainder of their games impressively and won the silver medal. Abaco's Samuel Fenelus was named the MVP of the soccer tourney. In the Bodybuilding competition, Borlin Darling won gold for Abaco in the Junior Male division. Lonesome Dove from Mores Island won the Class B Sailing gold medal and Abaco's Jamal Hepburn hit gold in both the Triple Jump and the Long Jump.

More Money: Abaco is to receive 20% of the total $14 million Local Government funds approved in the national budget. This represents an increase of more then $1 million over the past two years. Central Abaco will receive $1,350,000, North Abaco $777,840, South Abaco $303,940, Elbow Cay $326,500, Mores Island $201,210 and Grand Cay $155,160.

Fish - Only $300 a Pound! Four US residents were apprehended by police and fisheries inspectors near Carters Cay on 23rd July in possession of six crawfish, three of them undersized, and one undersized Nassau grouper. Michael Cobb pleaded guilty to possession of undersized and out of season crawfish and was fined $1,500 by Magistrate McKie. Charges against the other men were dropped.

Pastor Rebuked: Pastor Earlin Baillou of the Church of God, Dundas Town, was relieved of his duties following an emotional meeting with church members and the national overseer Neville E Hart. Police were present and took possession of the church keys from Pastor Baillou. The main point of contention appeared to be the granting of a Church of God scholarship to a Seventh Day Adventist student.

Prime Time Scholarship: Keora Brown of Dundas Town has been awarded a full four-year scholarship to study medicine by the Prime Time Foundation of Bill and Judy Yanover. The scholarship is tenable at Louisiana State University and is worth over $100,000. Keora, the daughter of Barbara and Augustine Williams, graduated as head girl from Abaco Central High School this summer with a GPA of 3.96. Keora sat eight BGCSE subjects in 2001 and achieved three A's and five B's.

Food Stores Open: Following the destruction of Golden Harvest, Abaco's largest supermarket, two new food stores have opened. Early in August M & R Food Store opened on Crockett Drive, Marsh Harbour. Owned by Roderick Strachan and his wife Mary, the store offers over 4,000 different products. Mr Strachan had previously operated a convenience store on the site of his father's former barber shop. The store opens from 8 am to 10 pm daily. Two weeks later Price Right opened on Stratton Drive. Owned by Chad Sawyer, the 8,000 square foot store carries a full line of grocery items.
