2002 Commonwealth Games: In the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England, Debbie Ferguson won three gold medals and spearheaded an exceptional performance by Bahamian athletes. Debbie won both the Women’s 100m and 200m in record times before anchoring the new Golden Girls in the 4 x 100m finals. Veteran Laverne Eve won the Women’s Javelin gold medal at age 37 and bronze medals were won by Abaco’s Sevatheda Fynes in the Women’s 100m, Arvard Moncur in the Men’s 400m, Leevan Sands in the Men’s Triple Jump, and the Men’s 4 x 400m relay team. Four gold and four bronze medals is the best record yet in the Commonwealth Games by a Bahamian team.
