GOOMBAY SUMMER
It's Goombay Summer time on Abaco again! On Thursday 23rd July the Royal Bahamas Police
Force Band opened the season in grand style, strutting their favourite medleys and
ending with that old criminal 'Stagger Lee'. There were over 500 people at the opening by Senator Calvin Johnson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, but
later in the evening the crowd grew into the thousand plus mark.
The celebration was held right in the middle of downtown Marsh Harbour outside the
Dove Plaza complex. Tourists and natives alike, young and old, were on hand to applaud
the Police Band as well as the maypole plaiters, limbo dancers and Junkanoo performers. Stalls provided traditional Bahamian food and drinks.
Future Goombay Summer on Abaco celebrations are slated for Fridays with Green Turtle
Cay and Sandy Point having slots in the seven week season which will end on 4th September.
